France, belgium and germany

it has  been a long time since I wrote , we have worked and played in london.....sorry if it is hard to read but i am using my ipad.

now it is the holidays and we are taking three weeks off to do a road  trip around Northern Francce, Belgium and Gerrmany .

trip  started with  a drive to Dover and the ferry to Calais, easy  crossing as the water  was flat all the way.

Arrived and then drove to Lille odd being the passenger in the middle of the road.

Day two
went  into lille on the bus, we were waiting at  the tram stop but a nice Frenchman came to say they were  repairing the line and no trams would be coming for a  couple  of months.

the centre of Lille as lovley big buildings big square and no cars so i did not have to worry about looking the wrong way
we stayed two nights in this hotel so that we could visit  ww2 sites  Ypres and Paschendale and many others.

We went to see where my grandad ( mums dad) fought during world war 2

He got a high up medal as he fought the whole way through, injured 4 times and acted as an officer leading a platoon even though he was a Sargent not a commissioned officer

Then we went to the graveyard where claires great great uncle of whom we have aa large  photo in our lounge is remembered, sadly he is a name on a wall as they never found his body..... I chose an unknown solder and left a cross from mackays.

Lots of them are graves of unknown soldiers and even graves with three unknown as they could not sort out the bits.. Ick
Where he fought the town has an all black square, a new Zealand garden, and a Helen Clark street.

60,000 men killed in one day in one of the battles

Sadly after lots of hot it is cold and raining today and we are now staying a a forest with a lake which normally has a beach open... But not today

Perry is sick with a tummy bug and asleep after being exhausted all day ( I know not me for a change). i drove all day on the " wrong side " of the road. Weird turning corners to the wrong side still no accidents and no one beeped at me.
Lovely countryside that European issue that everything shuts for three hours over lunch time so we aren't eating very well lol.
