Up and off on the train to Roma, an hour and a half later we were there and P went off to the aerial photo archive and F and I headed off to the Villa Borghese. We stopped first at the famous shoe shop that she and P went to last time in Rome and bought a nice strappy pair of sandals to go with the new dress. Sadly by the time we got to the Villa it was fully booked for the day and we had to make do with a walk round the huge grounds and a visit to the vial of one of the sculptors that worked for the family. He did some
amazing big works which are now in Bolivia and Turkey as well as the ones that were still there. It was his home and studio and strangely similar to the villas we are living in.
On our walk back through the park we came across a huge walkway , the road had 10 foot high solid panels down both sides and it went for ages up the road. Turns out it was a horse road to get them safely ( and un interfered with) from the race track stables to a dirt track made in the park. They had out up seating and banners and had dirt track races. Must have been amazing. We then went to the Spanish steps and
the Trinity Church. Met P for lunch at an expensive café opposite the main Police headquarters.
Went into St Lorenso where they have the grill that the saint was “cooked” . I read today that all catholic churches have to have a relic no wonder there are so many bits of the cross and various body parts about.
Then P headed off to our friend Lorenzo’s office for a tour and I took F to the Coliseums and gave her into the care of and English speaking guide and 11 Jesuits from USA.
I then headed back to Via Del Corso and an exhibition of paintings at the Museo. Only got half way round when F was finished so collected her, she had been too hot at the Coliseum and had not done the Forum. Then it was home time so we all met up and made our way back to the train and after getting separated I went to our platform the furthest away one ever 400m away and the other two did not find it on the departure chart so when they did not show I text them and they had to run for the train.
The bells just tolled 13….. funny seems like it should be 7.pm. At 3pm it chimes 33 I think whoever set the time might have had chunky fingers.
Friday
We toured Acquino ( birth place of Saint Thomas ) and had a nice wander around. A lady in a clothes shop got very excited at our being there and took us on a little tour… very nice of her.
Then this afternoon P went off in the car and I walked up the hill to the Church in the Cave
, not a hard climb but lots of long waist high scrub got in the way and the path was rocks on the edge of a terrace.
To get to the church you go through an abandoned village, they just left is and moved 200mtr down the hill and rebuilt, no one knows why.
When I got back the church that is our neighbour finally had it’s door open and couple were playing the flute and organ. Was magic it is such a plain church on the outside and inside was beautifully decorated and lots of paintings and statues. By the time I got to F and she was ready to go and look they were having a service so she did not want to intrude.
