Barcelona, what a wonderful city. I think it is the nicest we have visited so far. The fact that the sun shone and the sky was blue everyday certainly helped.
We had to get up at 4am to get a taxi to the airport and the flight at 6.30 am. But it was all smooth with no travel hassles at all. Arrived in Barcelona at Girona airport and got the bus for the 60 minute trip to the city centre. Grabbed our bags ( only 1 piece of carry on each ) a map and headed off to try and find our apartment. After phoning the agent we found they were still cleaning from the previous tenants so we found a park ( at the Arc de Triomf) and settled in to
have lunch and fill in the hours wait.
Finally time to find out new home and we could find it on the map but not anywhere in the maze of streets that make up the Barri Gotic, which was the area we were in. Finally asked a man loading a truck, he spoke no English but tried very hard walking up and down the street and waving his hands, then a woman who spoke English came a took me down the side street we thought it should be and sure enough it changed names across an alley. She held my arm srm said” don’t walk about here at night” and then off she went to work I guess. Very nice of her to take pity on the lost tourists.
The apartment was on the first floor and was 2 bedrooms a big lounge, dining, modern kitchen area and a shiny new bathroom. Not as big as it looked on the internet but perfect for our needs. It had a terrace out the back that had 6 large glass panels in the floor, turned out they were ceiling lights panels for the offices below, how weird having people sunning themselves on your roof while you are working.
Dropped out bags and we headed off to explore the area.
We walked and walked about alley, big
squares, beautiful old buildings everywhere.
O and C got tired so we left them at the apartment and P and I carried on, we did a tour of the Barcelona cathedral, which had a pond with geese living in a courtyard in the middle . A huge church with lots of saints in alcoves all round the walls with candles being placed infront . We were able to get a lift up onto the roof and look over the rooftops of the city. Watched a couple dancing in the square, and enjoyed people watching and wandering aimlessly about.
We made our way to the Port Vell area which is all done up with cafes and walkways etc and lots of very expensive looking boats and yachts. Then back to collect the other for food time. The apartment had a data projector set up so that night we watched the first four episodes of Lost on the wall and collapsed into bed.
