Italy 2012 post 1

Italy :Rome andTivoli
We found our hotel and then went for a walk along the Via Appia Antica, it was lovely so quiet.
As it was late in the day we did not go too far and headed back to our room and let the sun shine in, we had to get the caretaker to open the balcony door? and close it as well  crazy system.
Meal in the hotel as we got 20% off and I had a lovely ravioli.

Day two up and breakfasted ( huge buffet) and then off to walk the Via Apia Antica going the other direction towards the centre of Rome.

A lovely walk all cobble stones with countryside along both sides and with ruins all the way along, lots of tombs and chapels. After about 2 hours we reached Rome.
We had a luckily break as this week is Culture week in Lazio and entry was free to all the sites we wanted to go to , saving E7 at least each.
Next stop Thermes Caracalla a huge huge ruin of a bathing establishment three or four stories high and still some of the mosaics left.
Then into the centre of Rome and we went up onto the top of the Victor Emmanuel monument. The view was amazing over the rooftops of Rome.
A wander about Roman streets and then the underground and bus back to the hotel.
We went to a Cuban restaurant for dinner and had Yucca chips! they were really nice.

Next day we left Rome and went to visit the Tivoli Gardens, a lovely wander about the gardens and ornate Villa D'Este.

and Hadrian's Palace.

We watched a turtle climbing out of the pond grab some bread then slide back in. It was a huge upper body struggle for it to get out.
There was a display of sculptures of Hadrian s boyfriend Antinous, a very beautiful young man.
Again got in free ( excellent)
photos of gardens and palace ruins
