a less then wonderful New Year

Nice first day home then the next night at 10.30pm something I ate ( or a bug from the plane) kicked in and every hour all though the night I was either throwing up ( or the other) suffice to say I was a bit weak by morning . Went to the Dr ( they are in a neighbouring building) and got stop pills but did not manage to keep any food in for another 12 hours. A quick way to lose 3 kilos.....Sadly now it was New Years Eve and we would not get to use the Street Party tickets we had, at 11.30 I was well enough that we went to a street near the castle and with 100 or so others watched the midnight fire works display and exchanged happy new years with the people round us.

Two days later and food stays in and my tummy does not hurt anymore. As the Dr pointed out, could be worse, could have hit on the airplane, with a 2 sec warning period and sitting by the window it would have a been a disaster.

So sick of being indoors we headed off to continue our visiting of Scottish landmarks, today
Linlithgow Palace.
This is where Mary Queen of Scots was born and lots of Scottish kings lived as a home rather than a defend able castle. Huge place 7 stories high and we were able to clamber all  over it.  Then we had a walk round the frozen Loch. Very, very cold but at least the sky was blue and the wind was not blowing. The seagull had to sit on the ice after skidding to a halt.

Then we went to Blackness Castle which was on the coast,
Claims to fame...
  • it is shaped like a ship ( the lord who  build it told the King he was making an unsinkable ship for defense of the strait)
  • It was a prison a lot including the Napoleonic wars.
  • It has a pit prison where the prisoners where "dropped" into a hole with no toilet, windows or water but was cleaned twice a day when the tide flowed through it..... only used for the lowest of the low apparently. ( might act as a modern deterrent?)
  • it was used to store Scotland's supply of gunpowder at one stage when they concreted over the courtyard
It now gets dark at  4.00 and is cold all the time, good thing our flat is lovely and warm.
